If the first Western scientist to investigate the existence of subtle energy was Baron Karl von Reichenbach in the mid to late 1800s,1 then the first Western scientist to re-discover it was Wilhelm Reich more than sixty years later.
After Reichenbach died in 1869, his work was dismissed and forgotten by the scientific community for being too ephemeral to be taken as seriously as the more concrete research in particle physics and quantum mechanics.
Over sixty years later, Austrian psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich, once a promising protégé of Sigmund Freud’s, began a series of experiments in which he boiled beach sand at extremely high temperature, placed it in a container of liquid potassium chloride, and left it alone for two days.2
The extreme heat should have neutralized all bacteria and lifeforms in the sand. The liquid was later injected into egg medium and agar, then left alone for several more days.
Eventually, a yellow culture appeared which, when examined beneath a microscope, revealed a round vesicle that gave off an intense blue light.

The Discovery of Orgone
Reich called these blue glowing vesicles SAPA bions (short for sand packet bions) and discovered that when placed near cancer cells, they essentially neutralized the cancer cells. 3
He eventually intuited the presence of an energy accompanying the bions which he found to be much subtler than conventional radiation. He later called this energy orgone.
He developed several different experiments designed to build up the concentration of orgone in the lab. And every time he was successful in doing so, strange phenomena unfolded.
Reich discovered that high concentrations of orgone energy were capable of changing the fundamental properties of certain materials.
Like Reichenbach nearly 70 years before him, Reich found that when certain materials were sufficiently charged with subtle energy, their magnetic properties were structurally shifted, suggesting that subtle energy (Od, orgone) functioned at a more fundamental level than that of magnetism.4
Because life force and magnetism are deeply related, this knowledge would appear to be a potentially important factor for engineers to keep in mind when designing high powered magnetic technologies in the future.
The Energy of the Sun
Reich prepared dozens of cultures and stored them in a dark basement. While in complete darkness, and after allowing his eyes to adjust, he observed a gray-glue light throughout the basement.
He invited others over to the basement individually without giving them any prior knowledge of his experiment, and they all experienced various irritations apparently coming from some kind of subtle radiation.
Reich himself suffered inflammation of the optic nerves, and one gentleman came away with a noticeable tan and no other way to explain it.
And when afterward he experienced a deep physical invigoration, Reich asked whether this might have had anything to do with the sand having soaked up the energy of the sun over the course of many, many years.
Orgone, in other words, appeared to be the product of the sun.
The Sun in Radiesthesia and Shape Power
The French school of Radiesthesia in the early to mid 20th century fashioned a science of subtle energy they termed microvibratory physics, in which they delineated twelve gradations of subtle energy they coded as “colors.”
In their model, these colors were the natural result of the sun’s energy hitting the earth at a precise angle that produced each color/energy gradient individually and proportionately around the circumference of the globe.5
And the energy gradient most involved in biological thriving turned out to be the energy that reaches the earth at the point where the sun is directly overhead.
The French school referred to the emanations associated with these colors as shape-caused waves because they were found to be in resonance with specific geometries.
Which brings us to the concept of shape power, brought to us in the ‘70s by the pyramid power movement and again by Dan Davidson, author of 1997’s Shape Power: A Treatise on how form converts universal aether into electromagnetic and gravitic forces and related discoveries in gravitational physics.6
In his book, Davidson shares his research that found a correlation between the energy of biological thriving and the direct overhead position of the sun.
Although the French school of Radiesthesia had already determined such a correlation decades earlier, their work remained largely unknown in the West in the 90s.
Therefore, Davidson was likely unaware that he had essentially re-discovered this correlation independently nearly 70 years later.
In both French Radiesthesia and Davidson’s shape power, the sun’s energetic relationship to the earth plays a principal role in the production of these shape-caused waves associated with the subtle energies of life.
Wilhelm Reich independently and unknowingly corroborated their work when he realized that orgone was produced as a result of the sun’s energy charging the air molecules that surround us.
The Orgone Accumulator
Reich discovered that organic materials tend to absorb orgone and inorganic materials tend to reflect it.
In an effort to concentrate orgone energy, he constructed a box composed of alternating layers of inorganic and organic materials, with the outermost layer being organic and the innermost layer being inorganic.
The idea was to attract high concentrations of orgone energy and confine it to the interior of the accumulator.
After numerous bion experiments using his orgone accumulator, Reich concluded that orgone permeated the air.
Pranic Perception
When producing these high concentrations of orgone energy in the lab, Reich observed strange light phenomena inside his accumulator.
These phenomena pulsed, often in a spinning and spiraling motion, and were associated with strange effects like the draining of batteries.
According to the late Dr. Claude Swanson, Reich’s orgone was likely identical to the energy of prana described by theosophist A. E. Powell in 1925 when he wrote:
“The force of Prana, then, radiated from the sun, enters some of the atoms in the atmosphere and causes them to glow . . . . This form is known as the Vitality Globule . . . . The globules on account of their brilliance and extreme activity can be seen by almost anyone who cares to look, darting about in the atmosphere in immense numbers, especially on a sunny day. The best way to see them is to face directly away from the sun and focus the eyes a few feet away with a clear sky as background.”7
Likewise, Choa Kok Sui of Pranic Healing wrote:
“Air prana, solar prana, and ground prana are made of ‘white’ or general prana. Air and ground pranas are called vitality globules in esoteric parlance because, when they are seen clairvoyantly or by a person with slightly more sensitive eyes, they appear as small spheres or globules of light . . . . Some of the bigger air vitality globules can be easily seen by just staring at the sky for a few minutes especially just before the sunset.”8
One of Dr. Swanson’s friends, a talented remote viewer by the name of Rich Berry, described prana as coming in two varieties: luminous and dark.
The luminous particles move quickly (often in a cork-screw motion), are highly reflective, and fade in and out of sight every few seconds. These correlate with vitality globules related to prana and are essential to life.
The dark variety of prana, according to Berry, move more slowly than the luminous variety, are fewer in number, and also fade in and out of existence over a shortly curved path.
Both Swanson and Berry associate the dark variety of prana with dark matter, and Swanson correlates dark matter with left-hand torsion, one of two varieties of torsion energy in Nikolai Kozyrev’s causal mechanics.9
Speaking of these particles, Berry writes:
“All particles are ‘evenly spaced’ in three dimensions, regardless of depth. They are synchronized in motion, organized, perpetual and magnificent to see, moving in perfect harmony and orchestration . . . . These particles are responsible for entrainment - the synchronization of all things. Clocks in a room become entrained through these particles. They are connected to all consciousness, both human and non-human . . . . Our reality is a self-building reality. These particles build our reality 24-7-365. All consciousness on our planet is the ‘Master Programmer’ of these particles.”10
Reich’s Conclusions
Reich concluded that orgone:
Fills all space.
Penetrates all matter.
Pulses with life force.
Is attracted to water.
Is absorbed and accrued in organisms through the breath, food, and the skin.
Sped up healing of burns and wounds.
Swanson’s Conclusions
Dr. Swanson ultimately correlated orgone energy with Reichenbach’s Positive Od, also known as “left-hand torsion” in Kozyrev’s torsion physics.
He came to this conclusion because Reich’s reported effects of orgone match very closely those previously correlated with Postive Od reported by Reichenbach as well as those relayed by the Russian torsion researchers.
He also claimed that some of the strange phenomena mentioned by Reich are often seen in sites associated with the sacred or paranormal as well as certain crop circles.
